An initial appointment involves a talk about your pain, and your general health both past and present, including details of any medication you may be taking. Following that, a physical assessment using touch and movement will seek out areas of restriction and dysfunction. You will probably be asked to dress down to your underwear for this, though feel free to wear sports short / sports bra if you prefer. You may also choose to bring a friend or relative to accompany you. The assessment sometimes involves the use of medical diagnostic equipment, where necessary.
Treatment is carried out with you lying on the treatment table, and may involve soft tissue massage, rhythmic stretching of muscles, ligaments and joints, quick manipulation of joints (when you may hear the joint “click”), and other gentle techniques, such as cranial techniques, designed to release restrictions and improve function. Certain techniques may involve your active participation, and sometimes you may be given stretches or exercises to do at home. Techniques will be explained at the time, and if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to say so.
After an osteopathic treatment, you may feel tired, or stiff or sore, or find an increase in your symptoms for a few hours. This is not uncommon and perfectly normal. Feel free to ring and talk should you have any concerns.
I do a lot of sport and sometimes I push my body too much. I had pain in my right leg and shoulder. After two sessions, it was much better, and my flexibility was back to normal.
